Woman Loses Life in Tragic Anambra Road Accident
A tragic single-vehicle accident has resulted in the death of a woman on the Nteje-Onitsha Road in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State. The incident, which occurred recently, involved a Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC SUV and left four other individuals with varying injuries.
FRSC Commander Details Cause of Crash
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, Mrs. Bridget Asekhauno, officially confirmed the details of the accident to journalists in Awka on Saturday. She attributed the fatal crash to a combination of excessive speeding, a sudden tyre burst, and the subsequent loss of control by the driver.
According to eyewitness accounts relayed by Asekhauno, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was speeding when he encountered a motorcyclist riding against the flow of traffic. In a desperate attempt to avoid a collision with the cyclist, the driver lost control of the SUV. The vehicle then somersaulted before crashing.
Casualties and Emergency Response
The crash involved a total of five persons: two male adults, two female adults, and a young girl. Tragically, one of the female adults lost her life in the incident. The four other victims sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital by good Samaritans before the FRSC rescue team could arrive at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle remains unidentified, and the SUV did not have a visible registration number. Following the crash, the damaged vehicle was towed away from the road and taken to the Ogbunike Police Station for further investigation.
FRSC Issues Safety Plea to Motorists
Mrs. Asekhauno expressed her deep condolences to the family of the deceased woman and wished the injured victims a swift and complete recovery. She used the opportunity to reiterate a crucial safety message to all road users.
"We urge motorists to prioritise safety by avoiding speeding, maintaining their vehicles regularly, and obeying all traffic rules," the FRSC Commander stated emphatically. This tragic event underscores the deadly consequences of neglecting basic vehicle maintenance and disregarding speed limits on Nigerian roads.
