FRSC Urges Motorists to Exercise Caution on Pothole-Ridden Roads During Rainy Season
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, has issued a critical advisory urging motorists to exercise heightened caution when navigating highways with potholes to prevent avoidable crashes during the ongoing rainy season. The warning comes as part of efforts to address the increased risks posed by wet and slippery road conditions that significantly reduce vehicle control and braking efficiency.
Safety Measures and Recommendations
Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, speaking with journalists in Ota, emphasized the necessity of this advisory to remind drivers of the dangers associated with rainy weather. He advised motorists to maintain double or triple the usual following distance to allow for sufficient braking time on slick surfaces. "The FRSC is appealing to motorists to apply common-sense speed limits by reducing their speed below the posted limit when it rains," Ogunjobi stated. "Motorists should also exercise extreme caution and prioritize proactive vehicle maintenance to prevent unnecessary loss of lives."
Key recommendations from the FRSC include:
- Checking tyres for wear and ensuring vehicles are roadworthy by inspecting essential components, such as windscreen wipers, before travel.
- Promptly replacing worn-out wiper blades to maintain clear visibility during heavy rainfall.
- Ensuring that headlamps, brake lights, braking systems, and indicators are in proper working condition, especially in adverse weather.
- Avoiding flood-prone areas and refraining from driving through flooded roads or running water.
- Pulling over safely and waiting for rain to subside when visibility is poor.
Weather Predictions and Environmental Alerts
Ogunjobi highlighted that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency predicted variable rainfall patterns for the year, with Ogun State expected to experience a prolonged rainy season starting in April. Additionally, recent alerts from the Federal Ministry of Environment have identified Ogun among states at high risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding during this period. These factors underscore the urgency of the FRSC's call for vigilance and preparedness among drivers.
The commander stressed that proactive measures, combined with adherence to safety guidelines, are essential to mitigate the heightened risks on pothole-ridden roads during the rainy months. Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and prioritize their safety and that of other road users.
