Tragedy on Abuja's Airport Road: Man Dies in Crash While Rushing Sick Father to Hospital
Man Dies in Abuja Crash While Taking Father to Hospital

A devastating accident on Abuja's Airport Road has claimed the life of a man who was urgently transporting his sick father to a medical facility. The fatal crash occurred on Thursday morning near the Lugbe police signpost, highlighting the deadly consequences of distracted driving.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The incident involved a Toyota Highlander SUV, driven by the yet-to-be-identified man, which rammed into the rear of a stationary trailer. The force of the impact was so severe that it trapped the driver behind the steering wheel, leading to his instant death at the scene. His elderly father, who was a passenger in the vehicle, miraculously survived the collision.

According to accounts from eyewitnesses at the location, the driver was allegedly engaged in a phone call moments before he lost control of the vehicle. It was further reported that he was driving at high speed in a desperate bid to get his ailing parent to a private hospital in the Sabon-Lugbe area.

Emergency Response and Official Confirmation

Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lugbe Unit Command swiftly responded to the emergency. They evacuated the deceased driver's body and transported the injured father to the hospital for urgent medical attention. The FRSC confirmed that the driver was en route to that same hospital when the tragedy struck.

The FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Felix Theman, officially confirmed the accident. An anonymous official from the Lugbe Unit pointed to the combination of speeding and alleged mobile phone use as the probable cause of the crash.

A Pattern of Road Tragedies

This accident adds to a grim tally of road fatalities in the Federal Capital Territory and its environs. In a separate but similarly tragic incident, a man, his wife, and their two children lost their lives in an accident on the Mabushi Bridge in Abuja just a day prior, on Wednesday.

Furthermore, many are feared dead after another fatal accident occurred on Monday, May 19, 2025, at the Karu bridge along the busy Abuja-Keffi expressway. This highway is a critical link connecting the Federal Capital Territory to states like Benue and Plateau.

The sequence of these events underscores a persistent national crisis on Nigerian roads, calling for renewed focus on adherence to traffic regulations, the dangers of distracted driving, and overall road safety measures.
