Two Dead in Sagamu-Benin Expressway Crash

A fatal road accident on the busy Sagamu-Benin expressway has claimed two lives, leaving a community in mourning and highlighting ongoing traffic safety concerns. The tragic head-on collision occurred on Saturday at Ososa, within Ogun State, and involved a commercial bus and a heavy-duty truck.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) has confirmed the grim details of the incident. Public Relations Officer Babatunde Akinbiyi issued a statement from Abeokuta, identifying the vehicles involved. They were a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number BDG 274YG and a blue Benz truck registered as AKD 155YL.

According to the TRACE official's account, the driver of the Toyota bus was responsible for the crash. The motorist drove against the flow of traffic, a dangerous and illegal maneuver that led to a direct, head-on impact with the oncoming truck. In total, 21 persons were involved in the devastating event, with the two fatalities resulting from the severe force of the collision.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

Following the crash, emergency services were swiftly deployed to the scene. The bodies of the two deceased victims were recovered and have been taken to the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital morgue. To clear the obstruction and restore the vital transport link, the wreckage of the two vehicles was towed away from the highway.

TRACE reported that traffic flow, which had been partially disrupted by the accident, has now been restored along the corridor. The swift clearance operation helped to mitigate the potential for secondary incidents and lengthy traffic build-up on this major expressway.

A Call for Road Safety Vigilance

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of traffic violations, particularly wrong-way driving. The Sagamu-Benin expressway is a critical artery for commerce and travel, and such accidents cause immense human and economic loss.

Authorities continue to urge all motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules, avoid dangerous overtaking, and never drive against traffic. The need for constant vigilance and responsible driving behavior on Nigerian roads remains paramount to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
