The Federal Government has warned against the politicisation of insecurity in Nigeria, asserting that decisive actions are being implemented to tackle the challenge and restore peace in affected areas. It also reaffirmed its dedication to infrastructure development with the official launch of the Gombe–Biu Super Highway, a crucial part of the larger Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri dual carriageway project.
Minister Umahi Issues Warning at Flag-Off Ceremony
Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, issued the caution regarding insecurity during the flag-off ceremony in Gombe State. He emphasised that ongoing security challenges would be overcome under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Umahi urged Nigerians to support government initiatives rather than seeking political advantage from the situation, stressing that all stakeholders must collaborate to address insecurity nationwide.
According to a statement by his media aide, Francis Nwaze, Umahi described the highway project as a clear demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to infrastructure renewal and national integration. “I am very proud to boldly say that Gombe is an APC state. I’m very proud to have you as the Governor of Gombe State. Very proud to have President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the President of Nigeria,” Umahi said.
Commendation for Gombe State Governor
Umahi commended Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for what he described as significant transformation of the state, adding that the federal government was impressed by ongoing development efforts. “Just a few hours ago, you took us around, but what we saw, we are honestly very, very proud of what you have achieved in this state. We never knew that Gombe was this developed. We thank you, and you’re a true Nigerian,” he added.
Expansion of Highway Project Scope
Umahi also disclosed that the federal government had expanded the scope of the Gombe–Biu section following requests from the state government, assuring residents that construction would commence within weeks. “We promise you that within the next 30 days, you will see real work on this highway,” he said. The project is expected to improve connectivity, boost economic activities, and enhance security mobility across the northeastern corridor.
