An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion has claimed the lives of ten individuals and left seven others injured along the Bagega-Anka route in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The tragic incident occurred on Monday at approximately 6:15 p.m. when a commercial Volkswagen Golf 3 Wagon, carrying passengers from Bagega to Anka, struck an explosive device believed to have been planted by suspected bandits in the area.
Police Confirm Casualties
Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, June 11, 2026. Initially, one fatality and seven injuries were recorded. Following reports of the blast, the command deployed specialized tactical teams to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the police tactical team recovered nine additional bodies during ongoing search and recovery efforts. The explosion occurred between Tungar Kudaku and Bagega communities, prompting an immediate response from security operatives.
Recovery and Identification
A police source quoted by Zagazola stated, "Following the deployment of security personnel to the affected area, an extensive assessment was carried out, leading to the recovery of nine additional bodies from the scene of the explosion." The recovered bodies were evacuated to a hospital for autopsy and other necessary procedures before being released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Among the deceased are Abban Bagega, a fresh graduate of Federal University Gusau; his father, Alhaji Salisu Bagega; and his younger brother. The loss has deeply affected the local community.

Police authorities have strengthened security measures along the Anka–Bagega corridor to prevent further incidents and reassure road users. Visibility patrols have been intensified along the route as part of efforts to enhance security and deter criminal activities. Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or objects to security agencies.
