The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into a runway excursion involving an Enugu Air Embraer E170 aircraft at Benin Airport. The incident occurred on Thursday, July 23, at approximately 3:10 p.m. when the aircraft, operating Flight 4264 (registration 5N-ENR) from Lagos to Benin, overran the end of Runway 05 while landing.
No Injuries Reported Among Passengers and Crew
According to the NSIB, there were 63 passengers and five crew members on board at the time of the incident. All occupants were safely accounted for, and no injuries were reported. In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, the bureau said its investigation team arrived at the scene within minutes of being notified.
“The NSIB's Go Team was mobilised and on the ground at the occurrence site within minutes of notification, underscoring the Bureau's commitment to a rapid and effective emergency response,” the statement read.
Investigation Process Underway
The bureau said investigators are collecting and preserving evidence, interviewing the flight crew and other relevant personnel, examining the aircraft, assessing runway conditions, and reviewing operational and technical information to determine the cause of the incident. The NSIB added that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other relevant airport authorities have been notified, while the aircraft has been secured.
NSIB Director General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., expressed relief that everyone on board escaped unharmed but stressed that the incident would be thoroughly investigated. “While this is reassuring, every runway excursion is a serious occurrence that deserves a thorough and independent investigation,” he said.
Swift Emergency Response
“Our Go Team was on the ground within minutes of notification, and that speed of response reflects the readiness and professionalism of our investigators. We urge the public to refrain from speculation as our investigators carry out their work in accordance with international standards,” Badeh added.
The bureau said a preliminary report will be released within 30 days in line with regulatory requirements, while the final report, including safety recommendations, will be published after the investigation is completed.
Flight Operations Temporarily Disrupted
The incident temporarily disrupted flight operations at Benin Airport as emergency responders secured the aircraft and aviation officials assessed the situation. Enugu Air also acknowledged the incident, stating that the runway excursion could lead to temporary adjustments to some flight schedules. The airline said affected passengers would be contacted directly and provided with the necessary assistance.
