Obi Urges Kidnappers: Free Children, Let Humanity Prevail

The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has issued a heartfelt appeal to the abductors holding dozens of schoolchildren and their teachers captive, urging them to release the victims immediately and allow them to reunite with their families.

Heartbreaking Images Spark Appeal

Obi's appeal follows the circulation of disturbing images and reports showing the condition of some of the abducted children, a development he described as both heartbreaking and a stark reminder of Nigeria's worsening security crisis. In a statement posted on his X platform on Wednesday, Obi said the suffering of the children should awaken the conscience of every Nigerian, particularly those responsible for their captivity.

"I am deeply shocked and heartbroken by the condition in which these abducted schoolchildren are, as seen from their battered bodies. It is a painful reminder of the depth of insecurity in our country," he said.

Consequences of Poor Governance

The former Anambra State governor said the tragedy reflects the long-term consequences of poor governance, neglect of social development and the failure to address insecurity before it spiraled into a national emergency. According to him, the nation's current challenges are evidence that societies ultimately pay a heavy price when leaders fail to invest in the welfare, security and future of their people.

"I have often said that the society we neglect today will take its revenge on our children tomorrow. What we are witnessing today is a painful manifestation of that reality. These innocent children have become victims of problems that should have been addressed long ago," Obi warned.

Plea for Mercy

Turning directly to the abductors, Obi made an emotional plea for mercy, urging them to see the victims not as bargaining chips but as innocent children whose lives and dreams hang in the balance. "To those holding these children, I appeal to whatever humanity remains in your hearts. These children have done nothing wrong. They are somebody's sons and daughters. They are the hopes of families and the future of our nation."

"Look at them and imagine your own children in their place. Imagine the pain their parents are enduring every passing day. No grievance, no hardship and no cause can justify the continued suffering of innocent children," he added.

Call for Compassion and Rescue

The former governor said every child deserves the safety of a classroom, not the trauma of captivity, and appealed to the kidnappers to embrace compassion over cruelty. "There is still an opportunity to do the right thing. Let mercy prevail over violence. Release these children and their teachers. Allow them to return home safely to their families, their schools and their future."

Obi also called on security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and ensure that every available resource is deployed toward securing the freedom of the victims. He stressed that the protection of children must remain a national priority and urged governments at all levels to take urgent steps to prevent schools from becoming targets of criminal attacks. "Our children should never have to pay the price for the failures of society. We owe them security, hope and a future. We must do everything possible to bring them home safely."
