A tragic plane crash occurred on a Texas highway on Tuesday, June 16, when a small business jet carrying six people crashed, resulting in one fatality and five injuries. The aircraft, a Cessna Citation Latitude operated by NetJets, had departed from San José del Cabo, Mexico, en route to Austin, Texas, but was diverted to Laredo.
Crash Details
The plane lost contact with air traffic control before crashing onto a highway approximately three miles from Laredo International Airport. Witnesses reported that the aircraft experienced an apparent mechanical failure and struck a moving car on the roadway. The plane was found broken in half and tipped over, with flames visible.
Rescue Efforts
Footage from the scene showed two individuals using a sledgehammer and shovel to break the cockpit glass and open the plane's door. Zayra Garza, who arrived at the accident scene, described the scene as surreal, saying, "It looked like part of a movie. I was in shock." She noted that three people who appeared to be teenagers rushed out of the plane, along with someone who seemed to be a pilot.
Casualties and Injuries
Police confirmed that one person died, while the other five passengers sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital. Laredo Police Public Information Officer Jose Baeza stated, "Regrettably and tragically, there is one deceased involved in this crash." Additionally, five police officers responding to the crash were hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the rescue operation.
Investigation Ongoing
The cause of the crash is under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is expected to lead the inquiry. The incident has raised concerns about aviation safety and emergency landing procedures.
