New information has surfaced regarding a series of military airstrikes conducted by the United States in parts of Sokoto State, North-West Nigeria. Local government authorities have confirmed that the aerial bombardments targeted locations within both Tangaza and Tambuwal Local Government Areas.
Local Chairman Confirms Strikes on Terrorist Camps
The Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area, Isa Saleh Bashir, provided confirmation of the military action. In an interview with the BBC, Bashir stated that the strikes were directed at bush paths and suspected camps used by terrorist elements operating in the region.
He specifically mentioned that villages, including Tandami, were affected during the operation. The council chairman clarified that while official casualty figures are still being compiled, there were confirmed injuries as a result of the attacks.
Terrorist Group Seen Fleeing Towards Niger Republic
A significant development following the airstrikes is the reported movement of terrorist fighters. Bashir revealed that security forces from the neighbouring Niger Republic, who were on patrol, observed members of the notorious Lakurawa terrorist group fleeing the area shortly after the bombardment.
"Reports indicate that Niger Republic security forces on patrol said they saw Lakurawa fleeing the area," Bashir told the BBC. This suggests the airstrikes successfully disrupted the group's activities, forcing them to abandon their positions.
Ongoing Operations and Awaiting Full Assessment
The situation on the ground remains dynamic as assessments continue. The precise scope of the damage and the final number of casualties are yet to be officially determined by Nigerian and US authorities. The airstrikes, which occurred, represent a significant escalation in international military support for Nigeria's fight against terrorism and banditry in its northern regions.
Residents in the affected communities have reported moments of intense aerial activity, confirming the scale of the operation. Security analysts anticipate that these targeted strikes will significantly degrade the operational capabilities of terrorist factions in the Sokoto axis, particularly the Lakurawa group, which has been a source of instability.
