Trump Warns of Possible Naval Blockade and Kharg Island Takeover
President Donald Trump has stated that the United States may consider reimposing a naval blockade on Iran in the Strait of Hormuz and potentially taking control of Kharg Island. These actions could reignite the conflict between the two nations and have severe repercussions for the global economy.
Background of the Ceasefire and Recent Strikes
The naval blockade was lifted last month following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the US, ending months of hostilities. The war had driven global oil prices above $100 per barrel, but they have since fallen to around $70 per barrel after the agreement. However, tensions have escalated again.
On Tuesday night, the US military launched strikes on Tehran in retaliation for Iranian attacks on commercial ships. NATO chief Mark Rutte described the American strikes as “absolutely necessary,” accusing Iran of “basically violating the ceasefire.” The US claimed to have targeted over 80 Iranian facilities. In response, Iran fired missiles at 85 US facilities in the Gulf region.
Trump Declares Ceasefire Over
Hours after the exchange, President Trump declared the ceasefire agreement with Iran over, calling Iran’s leadership “scum” and “cuckoo.” He also threatened a US attack on Iran tonight, stating, “We’re going to hit them hard tonight, but we’ll see how it all works out,” speaking to reporters in Ankara, Turkey, ahead of the NATO summit.
Details of the Naval Blockade Threat
Regarding the naval blockade, Trump said it would only affect Iran and that NATO allies would send minesweepers to the Strait of Hormuz. “Anybody else can have whatever they want, of course,” he added. “They’ll [Iran] drop some mines if they can … but it’s hard because we’re taking out those little boats now with the same weapon we use to take out the drug lords.”
Trump also announced that the US had revoked its temporary suspension of sanctions on Iranian oil sales. He blamed Iran for the recent escalation, but Iran claims it fired at ships because their movement on the Omani side of the Strait of Hormuz violated the MoU.
Iranian Request for Timeout During Khamenei's Burial
The American leader further alleged that Iranian leaders had requested a “timeout” during the burial of Ali Khamenei, fearing a US attack. “They asked for a timeout; they wanted to go to the funeral of Khamenei, and I said give it to them, and they started shooting missiles,” Trump said. “I mean, it was a crazy thing. Now we did kill him, so I guess you have to look at it that way,” he conceded. “They also asked that we not kill them, and we said we’re not going to kill you” during the funeral.
