Enugu LG Launches 'Operation Kwechiri' to Fight Insecurity

The Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area in Enugu State, Chijioke Ezugwu, has taken a decisive step to fortify security by officially launching a special security initiative named 'Operation Kwechiri'.

A Multi-Pronged Security Offensive

During the inauguration ceremony held at Nkpologu Ward, Ezugwu detailed the comprehensive nature of the operation. He described it as a direct effort to complement the security investments made by the state governor, Peter Mbah. The core of the launch involved the deployment of significant manpower and hardware.

The council has deployed an additional 320 vigilante personnel, who have undergone specific training for their new roles. To enhance mobility and rapid response, the local government procured and launched four security vehicles and two-wheeled units.

Logistics and Infrastructure for Safety

The newly launched security fleet comprises one Hilux gun truck, three Toyota Sienna vans, and 25 brand new motorcycles. These assets have been handed over to the local Neighbourhood Watch group. The strategy is designed to enable 24-hour security surveillance across all 16 political wards in Uzo-Uwani.

Looking ahead, Ezugwu announced plans to construct a Uzo-Uwani Command and Control Centre. This facility will enable digital monitoring of security situations in homes and on farmlands. Furthermore, the council plans to clear the flanks of major roads to improve visibility and safety. The targeted roads include:

  • Adani Opanda Nkpologu-Obimo Road
  • Uzo Edem Nrobo Abi Nimbo Road
  • Uvuru Ukpatta Umulokpa Road

Leadership and Broader Community Impact

In a strong declaration of commitment, Chairman Ezugwu stated his personal readiness to lead from the front. "I am ever ready to lay down my life for the people of Uzo-Uwani, which is why I do not sit in the comfort of my office to give orders. I lead the fight into the thickest bushes," he asserted.

Beyond security, Ezugwu highlighted parallel efforts to tackle unemployment, noting that over 1,000 youths have been empowered, and agricultural production is being ramped up. He also commended existing security agencies, including the Neighbourhood Watch and State Forest Guard, for their resilience.

The event attracted notable figures who endorsed the initiative. The Chief Security Officer of the Government House, SP Osundu Ifeanyi, said the chairman had increased momentum in the fight against insecurity. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Frank Anioma, praised Ezugwu's leadership style. The Area Commander for Nsukka Zone, Stephen Gudu, encouraged operatives to make good use of the new resources.
