AIU Hands Nigerian Coach Hameed Muritala Lifetime Ban for Doping Violation

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has issued a lifetime ban against Nigerian athletics coach Hameed Muritala, following his conviction for doping a minor athlete. This severe penalty comes after the National Anti-Doping Committee (NADC) of Nigeria initially imposed a 10-year suspension on Muritala, but the AIU deemed this sanction too lenient given the gravity of the offense.

Escalation of Sanctions Due to Leniency Concerns

The AIU, which oversees international-level athletes, support personnel, and officials affiliated with World Athletics, confirmed the lifetime ban yesterday. The unit expressed disapproval of the original 10-year suspension, arguing that it did not adequately address the serious nature of doping a minor. This decision underscores the AIU's commitment to enforcing strict anti-doping standards globally.

Violation of Suspension Leads to Harsher Penalty

Reports emerged that Muritala, despite his initial suspension, was observed leading Kwara State athletes to the AFN Golden League in Benin City. This blatant disregard for the ban prompted the AIU to escalate the sanction to a lifetime prohibition. The AIU maintains a consolidated list of individuals serving ineligibility periods in athletics, including those penalized at national levels, to ensure transparency and compliance.
