A Cape Verde footballer is under police investigation following an alleged sexual assault at the team hotel in Auckland, New Zealand. The incident reportedly occurred during the FIFA Series in March, a tournament featuring New Zealand, Finland, Chile, and Cape Verde.
Details of the Alleged Incident
The alleged attack is said to have taken place at the Cape Verde team hotel shortly after their match against Chile at Eden Park on Friday, March 27. The complaint involves a player who is part of the Cape Verde national team, according to the New Zealand Herald. Police are currently seeking CCTV footage from the hotel to support their investigation.
New Zealand police confirmed to the Herald: 'Police can confirm an allegation is under investigation, reported to us on April 10, 2026, in central Auckland. We are unable to comment further at this time.' The alleged incident was not immediately reported, with the complaint filed weeks after the event.
FIFA and Local Authorities Respond
FIFA has acknowledged the matter and stated that they are making their own inquiries, having only been alerted to the alleged attack in the months following the tournament. However, beyond their intention to conduct initial inquiries, FIFA has said they have no official comment to make at this time. New Zealand Football has also confirmed they are unable to comment on the alleged incident.
The Cape Verde squad arrived in New Zealand on March 22. They lost their opening tie 4-2 to Chile on March 27—the night of the alleged attack—before beating Finland on penalties. The FIFA Series is an initiative by football's governing body to provide teams from different confederations with opportunities to play meaningful matches.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to gather evidence from the hotel and other sources. No charges have been filed at this stage.
