Schoolmate Partners Ecobank for 3rd National Schools Team Chess Championship
Schoolmate, the co-sponsor of the 3rd Ecobank National Schools Team Chess Championship, has explained its decision to partner with Ecobank for the event. The 2026 edition of the championship, which boasts a total prize fund of N20 million, is set to commence on May 7 at the Ecobank Pan African Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos.
In a press conference announcing the partnership, Ambesh Kumar, Head of Marketing at Schoolmate Nigeria, stated that the organization chose to support the championship because it aligns with its core values. "We are deeply committed to quality education for children, and this tournament serves as an excellent platform to further that cause. That is why we have decided to get involved," Kumar said.
Kumar further noted that last year, Schoolmate distributed exercise books to all participants. "This is the first time we are joining as a co-sponsor. We are delighted to partner with Ecobank for this championship. Schoolmate has been operating in Nigeria for several years, and we view this chess championship as a meaningful way to give back to society," he added.
The Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, Prince Adeyinka Adewole, revealed that the tournament is open to both primary and secondary school students. Winners in the primary school category will receive N2 million, while champions in the secondary school category will be awarded N2.5 million. "In total, N20 million has been allocated as prize money," Adewole confirmed.
Kunle Adewoyi, Head of Educational and Social Services at Ecobank, emphasized the bank's commitment to chess sponsorship due to its developmental benefits for children. "Ecobank places a high priority on human capital development, and this championship aligns perfectly with our strategic initiatives for people development," Adewoyi explained.
He continued: "Chess is a mentally demanding sport. It enhances IQ, strategic thinking, and positioning. At Ecobank, we see this as an ideal way to prepare young minds for leadership roles. We intend to sustain this partnership for many years to come, nurturing these children to become Grandmasters in the future."
Adewoyi also hinted that exceptional players from the competition may be offered internship opportunities at the bank to further develop their cognitive abilities and gain insight into banking operations.
