In a major development for Nigerian sports enthusiasts, DStv has revealed plans to launch a dedicated SuperSport channel specifically for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament. This exciting announcement comes just weeks after the pay-TV platform made all its channels accessible to subscribers across every package tier.
Canal+ Strengthens African Football Coverage
The new sports channel will begin broadcasting in December 2025, strategically timed ahead of the AFCON tournament hosted by Morocco starting December 21, 2025. This move follows a significant meeting between Canal+ Africa CEO David Mignot and CAF President Patrice Motsepe at SuperSport's Studio 6 in Johannesburg.
The broadcast coverage will be available in multiple languages, including English, French, Portuguese, and selected African indigenous languages, ensuring comprehensive accessibility for diverse audiences across the continent.
Historic Media Merger Creates Content Powerhouse
This development follows the official completion of Canal+'s takeover of MultiChoice on September 22, 2025, after fulfilling all regulatory requirements. The French media giant gradually increased its stake in MultiChoice since first acquiring 6.5% in October 2020, eventually triggering a mandatory buyout offer after surpassing the 35% threshold.
The acquisition valued MultiChoice at approximately R55 billion, with Canal+ offering R125 per share for remaining stock. This represents one of the largest media mergers in African history, creating a continental entertainment giant.
Expanded Content and Subscription Flexibility
David Mignot revealed in a recent interview that the merger will significantly enhance DStv's content library by combining Canal+'s extensive European content catalogue with MultiChoice's African productions. The combined platform will deliver nearly 10,000 hours of fresh content annually in 20 to 35 languages.
As part of the enhanced sports offering, DStv subscribers can now enjoy live French Ligue 1 McDonald's matches every weekend on SuperSport, with up to three games broadcast weekly featuring stars like Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé.
In related developments, MultiChoice has begun testing weekly subscription plans in Uganda, with plans to expand to other markets if the trial proves successful. This initiative aims to align subscription periods with customers' cash flow patterns.
