Last month, on October 23, the legendary Rashidi Yekini would have celebrated his 62nd birthday. Instead, the Nigerian football community finds itself still grappling with unanswered questions about his mysterious death and the lack of proper remembrance for one of Africa's most celebrated football ambassadors.
Yekini's iconic celebration after scoring Nigeria's first-ever World Cup goal in 1994 remains permanently etched in football history. Yet, as the country continues its pursuit of World Cup glory, the circumstances surrounding the striker's death at age 48 remain shrouded in mystery and neglect.
The Mysterious Circumstances
When news of Rashidi Yekini's death broke on May 4, 2012, it immediately raised suspicions among those who knew him well. The 1993 African Footballer of the Year maintained a rigorous daily training routine for 14 years after retiring from international football, making his sudden demise at such a relatively young age difficult to comprehend.
Segun Odegbami, former Nigeria captain and one of the last people to see Yekini alive, expressed the collective disbelief: "Yekini is an African football legend and a mentor of so many people. He cannot just die like a nobody."
Approximately three weeks before his death, Yekini was forcibly taken from his Ibadan home by people claiming to be family members. They allegedly transported him to an unknown location for medical treatment that apparently went terribly wrong.
A Football Career for the History Books
Rashidi Yekini's football achievements place him among Africa's all-time greats. His record of 13 goals across five African Nations Cup tournaments (1984, 1988, 1990, 1992, and 1994) places him behind only Laurent Pokou and Samuel Eto'o in the competition's history.
In European football, Yekini made history by becoming one of the few Africans to top the scoring charts in a major European league, achieving this feat during the 1993-94 Portuguese season with Victoria Setubal. During his first stint with the club, he scored an incredible 90 goals in 108 appearances.
His career took him to clubs across Europe and beyond, including:

The Man Behind the Legend
Despite his fame and scoring prowess, Yekini remained a fundamentally private individual. Odegbami described him as someone whose "life was completely wrapped around football. The training ground was his world. On it, he came alive and shone like the mid-day sun. Outside it, he almost did not exist."
Yekini's early life in Kaduna, Northern Nigeria, was marked by significant hardship. In a September 2005 interview, he revealed the struggles he faced after losing his father at a young age: "I was sleeping in all kinds of places and had no idea about how I was going to survive. It was a very hard life and it made it hard to really put my trust in anyone."
This background likely contributed to his reclusive nature in later years, which some misinterpreted as deteriorating mental health. Odegbami strongly refuted these claims, insisting Yekini was "sane, healthy, fit and there was absolutely nothing wrong with him."
Unanswered Questions and Failed Investigations
The attempt to forcibly remove Yekini from his home wasn't the first. Baba Adisa Bolanta, former police commissioner of Oyo State, revealed he had prevented a similar attempt in mid-2010. "The family wanted to take him for treatment, but Rashidi told me he was unwilling to go with them," Bolanta explained.
Mohammed Olanrewaju, Yekini's lawyer for several years, confirmed this account and expressed shock at the police's refusal to investigate the footballer's death. "How can the police claim that they cannot look into Rashidi's death because they have received no formal complaint?" he questioned.
Thirteen years after his passing, the truth about what really happened to Rashidi Yekini remains elusive. The death certificate that might provide clues about the factors leading to his demise has yet to offer the clarity needed to unravel this tragic mystery.
As Nigeria continues to produce football talent and chase international glory, the unresolved circumstances surrounding one of its greatest players serve as a sobering reminder of the work still needed to properly honor and protect sporting legends.
