ANOCA Inspects Abuja Facilities for 2027 Africa School Games

The journey for Nigeria to host the 2027 African School Games advanced significantly yesterday as the ANOCA African School Games Coordination Commission held a collaborative meeting with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Games, chaired by Lekan Abari. The session took place at the ANOCA Secretariat in Abuja, marking the first major technical review since Nigeria was awarded hosting rights in 2025.

Detailed Presentation by LOC Chairman

Abari delivered an extensive 46-slide presentation covering governance, venues, logistics, and legacy plans. He outlined the structure of the LOC and its subcommittees, each tasked with specific aspects of the Games' delivery. The presentation mapped out key competition and non-competition venues across Abuja, including the Moshood Abiola National Stadium as the main venue for ceremonies, athletics, and other sports. The Transcorp Hilton Abuja will accommodate officials and stakeholders, while Jabi Lake is proposed for canoeing events. The Games Village and University of Abuja will serve as the athletes' camp and accommodation.

Proposed Dates and Rationale

Abari announced the proposed dates for the Games as August 22 to September 4, 2027. He explained that the 14-day window was chosen after considering Nigeria's political calendar, weather patterns, and the global school calendar to maximize athlete and spectator turnout.

ANOCA Commission Chairman's Response

Joao Da Costa Manuel, Chairman of the ANOCA African School Games Coordination Commission, expressed satisfaction after reviewing the presentation. He stated, "I am satisfied with the level of preparation, which the Local Organising Committee is putting in place." He urged the LOC to maintain close monitoring of all preparations to ensure Abuja delivers successful Games that set the standard for future editions.

Background and Expectations

The African School Games is ANOCA's flagship youth event, first held in Algeria in 2025 with over 30 African nations. Abuja 2027 will be the second edition, continuing Nigeria's streak of successfully hosting continental multi-sport Games. Over 3,000 student-athletes aged 14 to 16 are expected to compete across more than 20 sports.

Upcoming Inspections

The ANOCA Coordination Commission will continue its working visit with on-site inspections of proposed venues, including the Moshood Abiola National Stadium (Package A and B), Jabi Lake, accommodation facilities, and the University of Abuja campus.
