The contractor handling the remodeling of Warri City Stadium in Delta State has assured that the facility will be completed by September this year, potentially becoming a preferred venue for African countries seeking to host CAF and continental matches.
Contractor's Assurance
Olanrewaju Adeleke, Managing Director of Peculiar Consults, stated that the stadium is being upgraded to world-class standards. Speaking with The Guardian, he highlighted features such as a FIFA-standard hybrid grass surface, an advanced underground drainage system, a nine-lane tartan track meeting World Athletics standards, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a new indoor sports hall.
Additional Facilities
The complex will also include basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, two dedicated practice pitches, and advanced security and surveillance systems covering both interior and surrounding areas.
Adeleke noted that the playing turf, previously prone to waterlogging, has been raised to three layers with concrete underneath, ensuring no water accumulation even during heavy rains in Warri. The stadium's capacity will increase from 17,000 to 20,000 spectators.
Impact on African Football
He expressed confidence that the upgraded Warri Stadium will become a new sports destination for African countries, reducing the need for West African nations to travel to Morocco or South Africa for matches.
Adeleke also revealed that his company is handling the re-grassing of Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos and has secured contracts for two stadia in Bayelsa State, with potential work on Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba. He believes that completing these five stadia will elevate Nigeria's sports infrastructure closer to that of Morocco and South Africa.
