Nigeria Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team Makes Historic Commonwealth Games Debut
The Nigeria Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team has achieved a monumental milestone by securing a historic debut at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. This landmark achievement follows a thrilling victory in the qualifiers, marking a significant moment for Nigerian sports.
Qualifying Victory Over South Africa
In an enthralling final at the Commonwealth Games qualifiers held in Angola, the Nigerian team defeated South Africa with a score of 8-3. This victory was particularly impressive as it came after a resilient comeback, led by captain Ijigbamigbe Gbemisola Olubisi, who inspired her teammates to overcome the tournament favorites.
Notably, the Nigerian girls had previously faced a setback in the group stage, losing to the South Africans 7-3. However, they displayed remarkable determination and skill to snatch the sole ticket to the Commonwealth Games, showcasing their growth and tenacity on the international stage.
Leadership and Federation's Response
President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, Seyi Johnson, described this feat as a monumental achievement that will further accelerate the rapid growth of the sport in Nigeria. He emphasized the pivotal role played by the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) in supporting the team's success.
"As a President, I feel very fulfilled that we have been able to write history in Nigeria wheelchair basketball," Johnson stated. "Everyone associated with Nigeria Wheelchair basketball presently and even before have every reason to share in this credit because this is a result of many years of dedication and hard work."
Johnson extended special thanks to the NSC leadership, including Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their direction and support, which has helped various sports thrive in Nigeria, regardless of their size or popularity.
Men's Team Narrowly Misses Out
In a contrasting outcome, the Nigeria men's Wheelchair Basketball Team narrowly lost the Commonwealth Games ticket to South Africa, falling in the final with a score of 13-8. Despite this setback, both Nigeria and South Africa will officially represent the African continent at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with Nigeria competing in the women's event and South Africa in the men's event.
This dual representation highlights the competitive spirit and growing prominence of wheelchair basketball in Africa, setting the stage for an exciting showcase at the 2026 Games.
