In a landmark moment for African sports, Nigerian athlete Alade Ajibade has secured a place in the history books by winning the continent's first-ever medal in blind Sambo.
A Debut to Remember
The historic achievement took place at the 2025 World Sambo Championships in Bishkek, Uzbekistan. Competing in the men's -98kg category, Ajibade showcased exceptional skill and determination to clinch a bronze medal in his very first international tournament.
This victory is especially significant as Ajibade was the sole athlete to medal from Nigeria's three-man team, making his success a standout performance for the nation.
A Breakthrough for African Adaptive Sports
The momentous win was celebrated by Sheriff Hammed, the Vice President of the Sambo Associations of Nigeria. A key advocate for the sport's growth in Africa, Hammed hailed the achievement as a major breakthrough.
"This achievement is truly historic and deeply inspiring," Hammed stated. "It reflects not only the resilience and talent of our athletes but also the growing recognition of Africa’s potential in adaptive sports like Sambo."
He emphasized that the medal is a testament to Nigeria's commitment to inclusion and excellence, proving that with proper support, athletes of all abilities can excel on the global stage.
Nigeria Gains Full FIAS Membership
In a parallel development boosting the sport's profile in the country, Nigeria was officially admitted as a full member of the International SAMBO Federation (FIAS). This decision was made during the body's 37th elective congress.
Nigeria was welcomed alongside Togo, the Maldives, the Central African SAMBO Federation, and the SAMBO Union of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Delegates voted in favor of their inclusion as a new FIAS Executive Board was formed.
Together, Ajibade's medal and the federation's new status mark a pivotal period for Sambo in Nigeria, opening new doors for athletes in standard and adaptive disciplines.
