The Lagos Country Club in Ikeja was the epicenter of Nigerian squash excellence over the weekend, successfully concluding the second edition of the SIAO Closed, Club & Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tournament. The event attracted a vibrant gathering of players, officials, and fans from across the nation, solidifying its place on the country's sporting calendar.
A Platform for Sporting Tradition
During the opening ceremony, Abiodun Ariyibi, Managing Partner of SIAO, framed the tournament as more than just a competition. He emphasized its role in building a lasting legacy for the sport. "It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the second edition," Ariyibi stated. "On behalf of SIAO, it is my honour to open what promises to be another exciting celebration of squash excellence."
He extended commendations to the leadership of the Lagos Country Club, including President Mr. Seyi Adewunmi, Vice President Olatunji Amosu, the Club Council, and the Squash Section led by Chairman Mr. Sesan Asani. Ariyibi credited their collective commitment as the driving force behind raising sporting standards, expressing confidence that the tournament would continue to elevate the profile of squash.
Intense Competition Across Categories
The two-week sporting spectacle featured intense battles, drawing participation from over 13 squash clubs and more than 80 professional male and female athletes. Reflecting on the inaugural 2023 edition which attracted over 90 players from 16 clubs, Ariyibi noted the high level of skill and sportsmanship on display.
The championship finals delivered thrilling matches:
- In the Super Veteran category, Sanni Kabir (Yellowdot Club) defeated Funmi Bankole (Lagos Country Club) 3–0.
- The Veteran title was won by Clement Efakpokire (Ikoyi Club) who overpowered Femi Bankole (Yellowdot Club) 3–0.
- A major highlight was the Club Men’s Invitational final, where Bunmi Apata (Lagos Country Club) edged out Clement Efakpokire in a gripping five-set marathon, winning 3–2.
Professional Champions Emerge
The professional categories saw dominant performances from the eventual champions. In the PSA Ladies final, Rofiat Abdulazeez showcased superior skill, defeating Mostural Durosilorun with a convincing 3–0 victory (11/5, 11/8, 11/3).
The PSA Men’s final was similarly commanding, with Gabriel Olufunmilayo dominating Shuaib Giwa to secure a 3–0 win (11/2, 11/2, 11/6) and claim the title.
The successful hosting of the tournament underscores the growing depth and competitive spirit in Nigerian squash, providing a vital platform for both established professionals and veteran club players to shine.
