Nigeria Cricket Federation President Confident Ahead of Five-Nation Women's T-20 Tournament
The President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Uyi Akpata, has declared that Nigeria is not intimidated by the prospect of competing against cricket powerhouses such as South Africa and Zimbabwe in the upcoming five-nation Women's T-20 invitational tournament scheduled for Lagos this week. Akpata made this statement during a meeting with a select group of senior sports writers in Lagos over the weekend, emphasizing the team's readiness and the significance of the event.
Tournament Details and Participating Teams
Nigeria is set to host South Africa, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Ghana in the Women's T-20 tournament, which will be held at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Cricket Oval and the UNILAG Cricket Oval in Lagos. The competition is slated to begin on Wednesday and will conclude on March 29, with teams expected to start arriving from March 18. Akpata assured that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth and successful organization of the tournament, which is powered by Lotus Bank.
Significance of the Tournament for Nigerian Cricket
Akpata highlighted that this tournament is part of the NCF's strategic initiatives to popularize cricket in Nigeria and provide the national team with exposure to world-class competition. He expressed excitement about the quality of opposition, noting that this marks the first time a team from a test member nation will participate in a tournament in Nigeria. "For the South Africans to agree to participate in this tournament for the first time in Nigeria shows the level of confidence the international community has in the country and an eloquent endorsement of what we at the NCF have been doing of late," Akpata stated.
Readiness of the Nigerian Team
Regarding the preparedness of the Nigerian women's cricket team, Akpata insisted that "the girls are good and ready to go." He pointed out that they will be competing against players of similar age grades from some of the best cricket-playing nations on the continent. To support this, he referenced Nigeria's performance at the U-17 World Cup, where the team finished sixth and one of their players emerged as the Most Valuable Player (MVP), demonstrating the high caliber of Nigerian cricketers.
Role of Sponsors and Appreciation
Akpata also spoke on the crucial role of sponsors, particularly praising Lotus Bank for its significant commitment to the tournament. "They have been outstanding and we appreciate their commitment. I can't thank them enough," he said, acknowledging their support in making the event possible. This sponsorship is seen as a vital component in elevating the profile of cricket in Nigeria and ensuring the success of such international competitions.
