NFF Responds After Alex Iwobi's Hotel Video Sparks Super Eagles Controversy
NFF statement on Alex Iwobi's viral hotel video

The Nigeria Football Federation has broken its silence after midfielder Alex Iwobi shared a controversial video from the Super Eagles camp in Morocco, sparking widespread reactions from Nigerian football fans.

Viral Video Creates Social Media Storm

On November 10, 2025, Alex Iwobi posted a short video from his hotel room in Rabat, Morocco, showing the outside view which included an old building adjacent to the team's accommodation. The video quickly went viral across multiple social media platforms, drawing criticism from Nigerians concerned about the team's living conditions ahead of their crucial World Cup playoff match against Gabon.

The timing proved particularly sensitive as the NFF faces ongoing scrutiny over alleged misappropriation of funds for the FIFA Forward Programme designed to develop football in Nigeria.

Official NFF Response and Clarification

In response to the growing controversy, the NFF released an official statement through media officer Promise Efoghe, accompanied by footage showing both the exterior and interior of the team's hotel.

The federation confirmed the Super Eagles are staying at Rive Hotel in Rabat, explaining that the viral video showed an adjacent old building visible from some windows. Officials emphasized that Rive Hotel was selected specifically for its proximity to both the training facility and Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, where Nigeria will face Gabon on November 13.

Mixed Reactions from Nigerian Football Community

The NFF's clarification triggered divided opinions among Nigerian supporters. Some social media users defended Iwobi, noting he never directly criticized the hotel but simply shared a view from his room.

User @heedrix08 commented: "Nigerians always want to hear or see bad news, Iwobi never said that's the hotel they are camped, he only shows the next building to the hotel."

However, others criticized the Fulham midfielder for creating unnecessary distractions. @olayinka915299 wrote: "This was why Sunday Oliseh said the discipline in the team is not strong enough. On your first day in camp and count down to a major match, you're posting room videos."

Additional criticism targeted the NFF's hotel selection, with @Rotimi3601 stating: "Shame on whoever chose that hotel, that view is annoying and I am sure there are hotels with better views in the same location."

Team Preparations and Player Arrivals

Despite the social media controversy, Super Eagles preparations continue for the vital World Cup qualifier. The NFF confirmed that 14 players have already arrived in camp, including African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman and suspended defender Semi Ajayi.

According to CAF reports, Semi Ajayi was included in the squad despite his suspension with hopes he could feature in the second match if Nigeria secures victory against Gabon.

Iwobi later addressed the viral video, attempting to clarify the context behind his social media post that initially drew attention to the team's surroundings in Rabat.
