The 2026 edition of the O'jez Ladder table tennis tournament has commenced at the Ikeja Country Club table tennis section, featuring over 300 players competing for top honors. The event is exclusive to members of the club's table tennis section, providing a platform to demonstrate their skills and earn points to secure a spot among the top 20 ranked players.
Record Participation
According to the secretary of the table tennis section, Akeem Lekan Alli-Balogun, the tournament attracted a record number of entries, necessitating an extension to two weeks. “It is a tournament we all eagerly look forward to participating in. The prestige of being in the top 20 ranking and having your name on the board is a prime motivation for players,” Alli-Balogun stated.
Categories and Structure
The tournament features multiple categories for both men and women, based on playing ability and age. These include League One for top-rated players, League Two for moderate players, Veterans (ages 55-65), and Super Veterans (ages 65-80). This structure ensures fair competition and encourages participation across different skill levels and age groups.
Sponsorship and Vision
Joseph Odobeatu, chairman and managing director of O'jez Entertainment Group, has bankrolled the tournament for several years. He expressed his honor in sponsoring the event, noting, “This is one of the many ways we contribute towards sports development in the country, and it has always been a pleasure to see members compete for honors every year. As a table tennis player myself, I have represented and won trophies for the Ikeja Country Club in many tournaments, so it is exciting seeing people compete and test their skills and limits.”
The tournament continues to foster a competitive spirit and camaraderie among club members, reinforcing the club's commitment to promoting table tennis at the grassroots level.
