The ongoing National Wrestling Championship in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has introduced beach wrestling as a groundbreaking innovation, marking the first time this fast-growing global variant has been featured in Nigeria's premier wrestling competition. The championship, officially tagged as the "Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classic," has attracted some of the country's finest wrestlers who have converged on Yenagoa for this historic fourth edition of the national tournament.
Week-Long Tournament Showcases Emerging Talents
Organized by the Bayelsa State Ministry of Sports Development in collaboration with the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), the week-long tournament began on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, and will conclude on April 1, 2026. The event has drawn athletes from across Nigeria, providing a crucial platform for spotlighting emerging wrestling talents while introducing the exciting sand-based beach wrestling format to Nigerian sports enthusiasts.
The historic inclusion of beach wrestling represents a major highlight of this year's championship, with athletes competing in fiercely contested bouts on specially prepared sand surfaces. This innovative approach aligns with global wrestling trends and offers Nigerian wrestlers exposure to an internationally recognized discipline that continues to gain popularity worldwide.
Team Cross River Emerges as Early Standout
Team Cross River has established itself as one of the standout performers in the newly introduced beach wrestling category, recording impressive victories during the early stages of competition. Deborah Edet Ubana of Cross River opened the action with a notable victory over Blessing Apeh of Rivers State in the women's 60kg category, setting an intense competitive tone for the day's events.
Cross River further strengthened its dominance as Inah Johnson displayed superior technique and athleticism to overpower his opponent, securing another significant win for the team. Other notable performers included Gabriel Ubana Edet, who won a gold medal in the men's 55kg category, Mbasekei Lawrence Ubi who earned a bronze medal in the 57kg category, and Agoro Florence Sunday who secured a bronze medal in the Women's 49kg category.
Sports Officials Hail Beach Wrestling Introduction
Bayelsa State's Commissioner for Sports Development, Daniel Igali, described the introduction of beach wrestling as a significant step forward for the sport's development in Nigeria. Igali emphasized that beach wrestling has already been featured in the Youth Olympics and is being actively considered by the International Wrestling Federation for potential inclusion in future Olympic Games.
"This is an opportunity for Nigeria to key into a growing global sport and develop athletes that can compete internationally," Igali stated, highlighting the strategic importance of embracing this emerging wrestling discipline.
The Vice President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Chris Amkpila, emphasized the tournament's crucial role in talent discovery and athlete development. He explained that competitions like the Governor Douye Diri Wrestling Classic provide essential platforms for young wrestlers to showcase their abilities while attracting attention from national and international scouts.
"We are going to identify the talents here, nurture them, and take them to the international level," Amkpila affirmed, outlining the federation's commitment to developing Nigeria's wrestling potential.
Strategic Effort to Popularize New Wrestling Format
Lieutenant Colonel Okou Femedein Timipre, an international referee and Executive Secretary of the International Military Sports Council, Defence Headquarters, Abuja, described the event as a strategic effort to popularize beach wrestling in Nigeria. He noted that while beach wrestling remains relatively new, it holds strong potential for global growth and acceptance.
"This competition is helping to introduce beach wrestling to the public and promote it as a sport that can gain worldwide acceptance," Timipre added, underscoring the educational aspect of introducing this wrestling variant to Nigerian audiences.
The National Wrestling Championship continues through April 1, 2026, with athletes competing across various weight categories in both traditional and beach wrestling formats. The event represents a significant milestone in Nigeria's wrestling development, potentially opening new international opportunities for Nigerian athletes while expanding the sport's appeal to broader audiences.
