2025 GCU Relays: Teen Stars Compete for Glory This Saturday
2025 GCU Relays: Teen Stars Chase Glory Saturday

The stage is set for an explosive display of youthful talent as the seventh edition of the Government College Ughelli (GCU) Relays holds this Saturday, November 22, 2025. The one-day intercollegiate athletics competition will see aspiring teen stars from various schools battle for supremacy and announce their arrival on the national sports scene.

Schools in the Hunt for Double Honors

The chase for medals promises to be intense, with several schools eyeing a remarkable double victory. Urhobo College, Effurun, arrives with significant momentum, having recently been crowned champions of the Zenith Bank Principal’s Cup tournament. They will be looking to carry that winning form onto the track.

However, they face stiff competition from other formidable institutions. Novena University Demonstration School and Federal Government College, Warri are also strong contenders poised to challenge for the top spots. With over 60 medals and trophies up for grabs across various categories, the competition is expected to be fierce from start to finish.

Corporate Boost and Event Legacy

This year's event marks a significant milestone in its eight-year history, save for the break during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time, two major corporate brands—Friesland Campina WAMCO and Nigerian Breweries—are not just contributing products but will also be activating them live at the venue.

This value-in-kind partnership greatly enhances the experience for the youth in attendance. A key objective of the GCU Relays remains the revival and enhancement of healthy sports rivalry among secondary schools in Nigeria.

Unveiling the Next Generation of Stars

The GCU Relays has a proven track record of discovering and nurturing athletic talent. Past discoveries who have graduated from this platform include notable names like Godson Oghenebrume, Sunday Akintan, and Praise Ofoku.

According to the event organizers, this year's edition is particularly promising and is pregnant with potential athletes ready to be unveiled to the Nigerian public. All eyes will be on the running tracks this Saturday to see which new stars will emerge from the 2025 GCU Relays.
