Google Unveils Major Android Upgrades: Gemini AI, Pause Point, Googlebooks

Google has announced a host of new Android features, including major artificial intelligence upgrades, tools to reduce distractions, and an entirely new category of laptops called "Googlebooks." The free updates, unveiled during the "Android Show" livestream event on Tuesday, May 12, will roll out gradually to compatible Android phones over the next 12 months. Devices from Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, and Pixel will receive these enhancements.

Gemini Intelligence and Chrome Auto Browse

The most significant development is the introduction of "Gemini Intelligence," a unified AI designed to automate tasks such as placing food orders, assembling shopping baskets, and summarizing emails. Users will still need to grant permission for each action. This automation will also extend to the Chrome browser via "Chrome Auto Browse," launching in late June, to assist with booking tickets and completing lengthy online forms.

New Apps and Features

  • Gemini Intelligence: An AI integrated across apps to automate online shopping, booking, and email tasks.
  • Chrome Auto Browse: A Google assistant for Chrome that helps complete tedious online tasks like booking train tickets and submitting forms.
  • Rambler (Gboard Upgrade): An AI speech-to-text tool that removes filler words and supports multiple languages.
  • Pause Point: A tool that prevents interruptions from designated apps to promote focused device use.
  • Screen Reactions: An update to the screen recorder that enables simultaneous recording of your face and screen for reaction videos.
  • Generative Widgets: AI-driven home screen widgets created from simple text prompts.
  • Quick Share: An updated file-sharing feature that allows file transfer between Android and Apple devices via QR code and cloud link.
  • Instagram AI Tools: Smart photo/video enhancers, sound separation, HDR support, and advanced stabilization for Android.
  • Android Auto Redesign: A revamped in-car system with enhanced interface, updated navigation, widgets, Gemini support, and new maps data.
  • Googlebooks: A new category of AI-powered laptops from manufacturers like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, combining Chrome OS, Android app support, and Gemini Intelligence.

Additional Updates

Google also promised deeper AI integration across its productivity and entertainment apps. The redesigned Android Auto interface will feature more immersive visuals, including 3D buildings, terrain, and lane-level information while driving.

In related news, the Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT) has issued a high alert to Android users regarding a new malware campaign called "Tria Stealer." This malicious software targets Android devices, hijacking messaging accounts and intercepting one-time passwords to steal sensitive data. It spreads through deceptive tactics like fake event invitations on WhatsApp and Telegram.
