Seedfi Enters Canadian Market with Kouriar Launch
Fintech company Seedfi has officially expanded its operations into Canada, launching its cross-border payment platform Kouriar. This move follows the company's successful registration with the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) as both a Money Services Business (MSB) and a Payment Service Provider (PSP). The registrations enable Seedfi to offer regulated financial services in Canada, including money transfers and payment processing.
Kouriar Platform to Streamline Canada-Nigeria Payments
The newly launched Kouriar platform is designed to facilitate seamless money transfers between Canada and Nigeria. According to Seedfi, the platform leverages the company's existing infrastructure to provide faster, cheaper, and more transparent cross-border payments. Users can send funds directly to Nigerian bank accounts or mobile wallets, with competitive exchange rates and low fees. Seedfi's CEO emphasized that the expansion addresses the growing demand from the Nigerian diaspora in Canada, which numbers over 100,000 people and sends billions of dollars in remittances annually.
Regulatory Compliance and Security
By securing FINTRAC registrations, Seedfi ensures compliance with Canadian anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing (CTF) regulations. The company stated that it has implemented robust security measures, including encryption and transaction monitoring, to protect user data and funds. This regulatory milestone allows Seedfi to operate legally in Canada and builds trust among customers seeking reliable financial services.
Impact on Diaspora Remittances
Seedfi's entry into Canada is expected to lower the cost of remittances for Nigerians living abroad. According to World Bank data, the average cost of sending $200 to Nigeria is around 8%, which is higher than the Sustainable Development Goal target of 3%. Seedfi aims to undercut traditional banks and other money transfer operators by offering fees as low as 1% for Kouriar transactions. The company also plans to introduce additional features such as bill payments and virtual accounts in the coming months.
Future Expansion Plans
Seedfi's expansion to Canada is part of its broader strategy to grow its footprint in North America and Europe. The company has already secured regulatory approvals in the United Kingdom and is exploring opportunities in the United States. With the Canadian launch, Seedfi now serves customers in over 10 countries, processing millions of dollars in transactions monthly. The fintech aims to become a leading player in the African diaspora remittance market, which is projected to exceed $100 billion by 2025.
