According to activists on the ground, Starlink has been available without fees since Tuesday to anyone in Iran with the necessary receiver equipment. Although Elon Musk's SpaceX has not made an official announcement and has not commented on the reports, the service has become a critical lifeline. It allows citizens to bypass the state's most severe efforts yet to block digital communication with the outside world.
The timing is crucial. Iranian authorities have ramped up internet restrictions amid a renewed wave of demonstrations and violent state responses. Starlink, which provides internet access via a constellation of satellites, has emerged as an indispensable tool for activists and protesters determined to share information despite government-imposed shutdowns.
A Crucial Tool for Sharing the Truth
Mehdi Yahyanejad, an Iranian activist based in Los Angeles, confirmed the vital role Starlink is playing. His nonprofit organization, Net Freedom Pioneers, has been involved in smuggling Starlink terminals into the country. He highlighted the power of this technology by pointing to graphic footage that surfaced on Sunday.
"That footage showed a few hundred bodies on the ground, and it came out because of Starlink," Yahyanejad stated in an interview. The videos, which depicted rows of bodies at a forensic medical centre near Tehran, have been pivotal. "Those videos changed people's understanding of what is happening because they could see it with their own eyes," he explained.
Growth Despite Official Ban
It is important to note that Starlink remains officially banned by the Iranian government. However, its usage has grown steadily among protesters and activists who are committed to keeping communication channels open. The ability to share real-time evidence of the situation on the ground has proven to be a powerful counter to state narratives and repression.
