CIO Club Africa Awards 2024 Honor Digital Transformation Leaders
CIO Club Africa Awards Honor Tech Pioneers

The CIO and C-Suite Club Africa has celebrated outstanding technology executives who are driving digital evolution across the continent. The prestigious awards ceremony, now in its sixth year, honored leaders whose innovations have significantly strengthened digital capacity in key sectors like telecommunications and financial services.

Recognizing Africa's Digital Architects

During the high-level conference held in Lagos, Convener Abiola Laseinde revealed that the initiative was specifically designed to spotlight technology leaders who typically work behind the scenes. She described the awards as "a compelling vision" and "a movement" created to ensure digital leaders receive proper recognition.

Laseinde expressed serious concern about how technology leaders were frequently overlooked during crucial national moments, particularly noting their tireless but unrecognized efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Many worked tirelessly during the pandemic without recognition," she emphasized.

The Evolving Role of Technology Leadership

Olusegun Dada, President of the CIO and C-Suite Club Africa, highlighted the significant transformation in digital leadership across the continent. He noted that Chief Information Officers now occupy central roles in corporate strategy, marking a dramatic shift from previous years when technology experts were often marginalized.

"Before now, CIOs and technology experts had been left behind. This award has helped to bring recognition to them," Dada stated during his presentation.

In a fireside chat discussion, Dada provided insights into the changing expectations for technology executives, emphasizing that strategic communication has become essential in modern leadership. He explained that today's CIOs must effectively translate technical complexity into simple language for boards and investors, demonstrating the increasing importance of blending leadership, communication, and innovation in technology roles.

Building Africa's Digital Future Through Collaboration

The importance of developing strong leadership pipelines and encouraging young African professionals to embrace digital transformation was another key theme. Dada stressed that being part of the club means joining "a continental network of leaders shaping Africa's digital destiny."

Oluwakayode Adigun, Chairman of the Project Team, reinforced the critical need for collaboration in Africa's digital progress. He noted that strategic partnerships will ultimately determine Africa's influence in global technology conversations, emphasizing that "the most important thing is for people to collaborate because of the shift that is happening."

The event culminated in several prestigious awards being presented to distinguished technology leaders:

  • Shoyinka Shodunke of MTN Nigeria received the Overall CIO Africa of the Year award
  • Ademola Aladekomo, Chairman of Chams Group, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his decades of contribution to digital development
  • Ade Bajomo received the Digital Innovation Award for his groundbreaking work

The sixth edition of the CIO and C-Suite Awards Africa successfully highlighted the growing importance of technology leadership in driving Africa's digital transformation journey forward.
