The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has inaugurated a taskforce to drive Nigeria's sovereign cloud implementation, a move aimed at enhancing data sovereignty and boosting the country's digital economy. The taskforce, comprising key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, will develop a roadmap for the adoption and deployment of cloud computing infrastructure within Nigeria.
Taskforce Mandate and Composition
The taskforce is mandated to create a framework for the implementation of a sovereign cloud, which will ensure that data generated within Nigeria is stored and processed within the country's borders. This initiative is part of NITDA's broader strategy to promote local content in the technology sector and reduce reliance on foreign cloud services. According to Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the Director-General of NITDA, the sovereign cloud is critical for national security and economic development. "A sovereign cloud will not only protect our data but also create opportunities for local innovation and job creation," he said during the inauguration ceremony.
