Nigeria, U.S. Deepen Tech Partnership on Data Privacy, AI & Cybersecurity
NITDA Reaffirms Nigeria-U.S. Partnership on Data Privacy

Nigeria's National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reaffirmed its commitment to a strategic partnership with the United States, focusing on critical areas like data privacy, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity. The move aims to foster a secure and trusted digital ecosystem for economic growth.

Strengthening a Long-Standing Digital Alliance

The Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, made the reaffirmation while speaking at the Nigeria Data Privacy Capacity Building Workshop. The event was organized by the United States Department of State in collaboration with the Nigerian Mission and other key digital stakeholders.

Inuwa clarified that this collaboration is not a new initiative. It is part of a deliberate and growing effort by both nations to tackle emerging digital challenges and seize opportunities in the fast-paced technology landscape.

From Agreement to Action: Tangible Outcomes

The DG recalled that the foundation for this cooperation was laid in April 2024 through the U.S.-Nigeria Binational Commission. Both countries agreed then to collaborate in vital sectors including data privacy, AI, cybersecurity, and broader digital development.

He highlighted that this partnership has already yielded concrete results. Notable achievements include the co-hosting of an Artificial Intelligence Conference by the Federal Government and the U.S. Mission in Nigeria. Additionally, there have been technical engagements with leading U.S. cybersecurity firms.

Trust as the Cornerstone of Digital Transformation

Inuwa stressed that NITDA's focus on data privacy, AI, and cybersecurity is fundamentally about building trust within the digital ecosystem. He described trust as a key driver of digital transformation.

According to him, a lack of trust stifles innovation and raises operational costs. Conversely, when trust is present, it accelerates progress and lowers barriers to growth. Therefore, building a robust digital economy requires intentional efforts to protect data privacy, strengthen security frameworks, and deploy AI technologies responsibly.

The ongoing workshop and continued dialogue underscore a shared vision between Nigeria and the United States to navigate the complexities of the digital age together, ensuring security and prosperity for their citizens.
