Bayelsa Farmer Decries Repeated Farm Destruction by Alleged Herdsmen, Accuses Government of Neglect
Enibo Albert, a farmer based in Bayelsa State, has voiced her anguish after her farmland was allegedly invaded and completely destroyed by herdsmen and their cattle. This devastating incident, she claims, is not the first occurrence, highlighting a pattern of destruction that has left her livelihood in ruins.
History of Unaddressed Complaints
Albert explained that when a similar invasion happened previously, she took to social media to raise awareness, only to be met with dismissive responses from some individuals who accused her of "shouting" unnecessarily. Despite her outcry, no action was taken by authorities, allowing the herdsmen to return and finish off the remaining crops on her farm.
Extent of the Destruction
Displaying the extensive damage, Albert described the scene in despairing terms: "The destruction that these herders have caused right now is worse than I've ever seen. They've levelled, they've finished everything." She emphasized that farming is her sole source of income, stating, "I don't have anything else that I'm doing... They've finished everything. They came back and finished everything."
Criticism of Government Inaction
In a poignant critique, Albert lamented the perceived failure of government institutions to safeguard farmers' interests. She asserted, "Government has failed me, it has failed countless of farmers in Yenagoa." This statement underscores broader concerns about security and support for agricultural communities in the region, as farmers struggle to protect their means of survival amidst recurring threats.
The incident raises urgent questions about the effectiveness of local and state policies in addressing conflicts between herders and farmers, a persistent issue in many parts of Nigeria. Albert's story serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those dependent on agriculture for their livelihood.
