The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken a decisive step to protect the nation's forests by imposing a comprehensive ban on the export of wood and related products.
Minister Announces Sweeping Ban in Katsina
This significant policy shift was officially declared by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. The announcement came during the 18th gathering of the National Council on Environment, held in Katsina State.
Minister Lawal stated that the directive is grounded in a Presidential Executive Order formally named “Presidential Executive Order on the Prohibition of Exportation of Wood and Allied Products, 2025.” He emphasized that this drastic measure is essential to halt the rampant illegal logging and widespread deforestation occurring across Nigeria.
Protecting Nigeria's Environmental Future
“Our forests are crucial for environmental sustainability,” Lawal explained. He highlighted their vital roles in providing clean air and water, supporting community livelihoods, conserving the country's rich biodiversity, and helping to mitigate the harsh effects of climate change.
The minister issued a stern warning, noting that the continued export of timber directly threatens these critical benefits and jeopardizes the long-term health of Nigeria's natural environment.
Legal Basis and Enforcement
The official order was published in the Extraordinary Federal Republic of Nigeria Official Gazette No. 180, Vol. 112, dated 16 October 2025. It derives its legal authority from specific sections of the nation's constitution.
The policy is empowered by Sections 17(2) and 20 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). These sections grant the state the power to safeguard the environment, forests, and wildlife, and to prevent the exploitation of natural resources for private profit.
As part of the new directive, the government has revoked all previously issued export licences and permits for wood and allied products. This creates a clean slate for enforcement.
Under the new regime, security agencies and relevant ministries have been mandated to execute a total clampdown on all illegal logging operations nationwide. Their task is to ensure strict compliance with the export prohibition.
This move represents one of the strongest federal actions in recent years aimed directly at conserving Nigeria's dwindling forest cover and combating environmental degradation linked to the timber trade.
