Flood Ravages Rivers Community, Residents Count Losses

Residents of Oro-Owo Community in Rumueme Kingdom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, are in distress following severe flooding caused by a heavy downpour that swept through parts of Port Harcourt on Wednesday. The flood destroyed homes, businesses, and valuable property, submerging several streets and residential areas.

Residents Describe Alarming Situation

Affected residents described the situation as alarming, lamenting that the community has experienced recurring flooding without any lasting government intervention. The flash flood disrupted movement, making roads impassable and hindering commercial activities. Beyond property destruction, residents fear health risks from waterborne diseases and environmental degradation.

Orluwene, a resident, said: “We are suffering every rainy season. Many people have lost household items, goods and other valuables. Movement becomes difficult whenever it rains heavily, and the situation keeps getting worse.”

Calls for Urgent Government Action

Residents called on the Rivers State Government to urgently intervene by providing relief to affected families and implementing sustainable flood-control measures. They urged agencies responsible for urban planning, drainage, and environmental management to conduct immediate assessments and commence remedial works.

Secretary of the Oro-Owo Community Development Committee (CDC), Mr. Eze Otuonye, stated that the flooding has become a recurring nightmare. He disclosed that multiple appeals and complaints had been made over the years, but little meaningful action was taken. Otuonye appealed for decisive steps to tackle root causes, emphasizing that improving and expanding drainage infrastructure would protect lives, property, and livelihoods. He warned that without urgent intervention, residents will continue to face devastating losses during heavy rainfall.

Growing Concerns Over Flooding in Port Harcourt

This incident adds to growing concerns over flooding in Port Harcourt and its environs, especially during the peak rainy season. Residents demand improved drainage systems and proactive environmental management to mitigate the impact of recurring floods.
