Safiyat Saheed Bello's journey into agriculture is more than a business story; it is a testament to family heritage, personal struggle, and the drive to impact Nigeria's palm oil industry.
From 'Omo Elepo' Mockery to Agribusiness Success
Raised in a family of palm oil farmers, Bello faced mockery from peers due to the scent of palm oil on her uniform, earning the nickname 'omo elepo'. Instead of breaking her spirit, this experience fueled her passion. She founded Quad K Industrial Services Limited to improve palm oil production and increase Nigeria's capacity.
Vision and Mission
Quad K Industrial Services aims to transform production practices and maximize Nigeria's palm oil output. The company focuses on securing food availability and promoting economic diversification through value chains with smallholder farmers.
Personal Journey
For Bello, palm oil production is deeply personal. She grew up near processing sites, which exposed her to social stigmas. However, she turned the alias 'omo elepo' into a strength. She stated, "That humiliation did not kill my spirit; it molded me and gave me the vigor to embrace who I am."
Entrepreneurial Path
Quad K Industrial Services prioritizes hygiene, quality, and processing standards. Their palm oil is pure, rich in carotenoids and vitamins, with a two-year shelf life. Bello started her business in 2021 while working as a teacher. Balancing both roles led to losses and debts. By 2023, she won the Womenpreneur Pitch-a-ton by Access Bank W Community, resigned from teaching, and restructured her business.
Growth and Milestones
From an initial capital of N50,000, the company's projected turnover for 2025 is N170 million, with a target of N200 million by year-end. A key achievement is acquiring six acres of land for an oil palm plantation. Challenges included deceitful farmers causing client loss, but measures for transparency and traceability have been implemented.
Innovation and Future Plans
Bello plans to integrate AI and technology to boost efficiency and traceability. Three product concepts are in development, with one in prototype phase. Quad K aligns with SDGs 1, 2, 8, 9, 12, and 17, focusing on poverty alleviation, food security, and economic viability.
Message for Entrepreneurs
Bello advises young entrepreneurs to embrace setbacks as learning curves. She emphasizes that business sustainability relies on constant re-learning, unlearning, and learning.
