Kano's Ramadan Feeding Program Emerges as Economic Catalyst

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's annual Ramadan feeding program in Kano State has evolved beyond its primary humanitarian mission, emerging as a significant economic lifeline that is creating substantial job opportunities and stimulating local commerce throughout the fasting period.

Direct Employment and Income Generation

The 2026 Ramadan feeding initiative has directly employed hundreds of Kano residents, with particular emphasis on women and youth who have secured temporary positions in cooking, packaging, and distribution operations. Workers involved in the program have reported earnings ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦200,000 for the Ramadan period, providing crucial financial support to households during challenging economic times.

"The programme has created jobs for many youths," stated Ahmed Tijjani Auwal, Chairman of the State Ramadan Feeding Committee and Commissioner for Religious Affairs. "When they earn money, they go to the markets to buy goods such as food items and clothing, which helps stimulate the local economy."

Local Economic Stimulation

The program's massive procurement requirements have created unprecedented demand for ingredients including rice, onions, tomatoes, and livestock, benefiting farmers, market traders, and food suppliers across Kano. Local contractors managing the initiative have received substantial contracts that are enhancing their operational capacity and business growth.

Commissioner Auwal explained that "the large-scale procurement of food items such as rice, onions, tomatoes and livestock by contractors has significantly increased demand in Kano markets, benefiting traders, transporters and suppliers." He further noted that the economic circulation generated by the program could help the government recover part of its investment through increased tax revenue and broader economic activity.

Program Scale and Management

The 2026 Ramadan feeding program operates through 115 feeding centers distributed across all 44 local government areas of Kano State. Five major companies currently handle most food production, delivering tens of thousands of meal packs daily, while smaller caterers support operations at selected centers.

Hajara Abdullahi, Chief Executive Officer of Alateef restaurant, one of the participating contractors, revealed that her company alone distributes approximately 13,000 plates of food daily across 13 centers. "Some of the workers earn about ₦200,000, while others receive ₦100,000 for the Ramadan period," she disclosed, adding that her operation has created employment for about 250 workers, predominantly women.

Quality Assurance and Monitoring

The State Government has implemented rigorous monitoring protocols to ensure meals distributed to beneficiaries meet required quality and hygiene standards. Commissioner Auwal has been personally visiting preparation facilities across local government areas to assess food quantity, quality, and preparation conditions.

During a recent inspection of the Al-Lateef preparation facility, monitoring teams described the environment as clean and well-organized. "The packaging stage is very critical because it is the last point where the food is handled before it gets to the beneficiaries. We are satisfied with the hygiene level here," Auwal commented.

The commissioner attributed Governor Yusuf's keen interest in monitoring food preparation to his experience during a visit to Saudi Arabia, where he personally inspected kitchens preparing meals for pilgrims.

Social Cohesion and Women Empowerment

Beyond economic impacts, the program promotes social cohesion by bringing together people from diverse political and social backgrounds. "When people gather to receive food during Ramadan, they forget political differences. It strengthens unity and shows that the government cares about the welfare of its citizens," Auwal emphasized.

Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Amina HOD, commended the program's dual benefits, noting that "the programme is not only feeding residents but also empowering women economically" through employment opportunities and business participation.

Sustainable Economic Chain

The Ramadan feeding initiative has triggered a comprehensive chain of economic activities benefiting multiple sectors. Hajara Abdullahi's operation alone requires approximately 300 bags of food items and the slaughter of three cows daily to meet demand, creating ripple effects throughout the local economy.

By providing free daily Iftar meals, the program relieves financial pressure on vulnerable families, allowing them to redirect limited funds to other essential needs while simultaneously injecting substantial capital into local markets through wages and procurement.

The Ramadan Feeding Committee has committed to maintaining strict monitoring throughout the fasting period to ensure meals reach intended beneficiaries while preserving quality standards, ensuring the program continues to deliver both humanitarian and economic benefits to Kano residents.
