Katsina Launches N14 Billion Water Project to Combat Climate Change
Katsina invests N14bn in water conservation project

The Katsina State Government has officially commenced a massive water conservation project valued at N14.05 billion in Faskari Local Government Area, marking a significant step in addressing environmental challenges in the region.

Governor Radda Launches Ambitious Water Initiative

Governor Dikko Radda formally handed over the construction site to the implementing company on Tuesday evening at the Sabon Layin Galadima community in Faskari. The project is being executed in partnership with the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Programme, a multi-stakeholder initiative designed to combat climate change effects in vulnerable regions.

During the ceremony, Governor Radda emphasized his administration's unwavering commitment to strengthening water security across Katsina State. He highlighted that effective water conservation remains crucial for achieving multiple development objectives, including boosting food production, supporting pastoral communities, and expanding domestic water access for residents.

Project Specifications and Environmental Benefits

The water conservation structure boasts an impressive storage capacity of 700,000 cubic meters, positioning it as one of the most significant water bodies serving the local community. According to ACReSAL Project Coordinator Yusha'u Sani, this substantial capacity will support the next phase of irrigation activities and align with broader efforts to expand modern irrigation systems throughout the state.

Hon. Hamza Suleiman, Commissioner for Environment, explained that the project specifically aims to tackle the triple challenges of climate change, desertification, and water scarcity that have plagued semi-arid areas like Faskari. The structures will directly support farming activities, enhance food security, reduce land degradation, and help communities build resilience against extreme climate conditions.

Transparency and Community Ownership

Governor Radda assured residents that his administration would maintain transparency, accountability, and rigorous supervision throughout the project implementation. He emphasized that every construction stage would be closely monitored to ensure value for money and long-term sustainability of the investment.

The governor specifically called on the people of Sabon Layin Galadima to take ownership of the project, urging community members to protect and safeguard the infrastructure for the benefit of both present and future generations. He commended the Federal Government, World Bank, and other development partners supporting the ACReSAL Programme for their dedication and professionalism in making the project possible.

Additional Agricultural Investment in Katsina

In related development news, TORQ Agro is set to establish a $3.5 million (approximately N5 billion) integrated poultry farm and hatchery facility in Batagarawa Local Government Area. The project, scheduled for groundbreaking on Thursday, November 27, will occupy a 10-hectare plot in the Barawa Forest Reserve.

Expected for completion within 12 months starting January 2026, the poultry operation will house 300,000 layers and 100,000 broilers, making it one of the largest such facilities in northern Nigeria. According to Governor's spokesperson Ibrahim Mohammed, the project is projected to create 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing significant employment opportunities for Katsina youths while boosting the state's agricultural economy.
