Niger Delta Stakeholders Urged to Drive Environmental Restoration and Blue Economy
Stakeholders in the Niger Delta region have been strongly urged to take a leading role in championing environmental restoration, promoting the blue economy, and driving sustainable industrialization. This call is part of a broader effort to reposition the oil-rich area for significant growth and development. Additionally, they have been tasked with unlocking local investments, strengthening private sector leadership, and accelerating infrastructure development to shape a new economic trajectory for the region.
Concerns Over Development Gaps and Mismanaged Funds
The appeal follows growing concerns that the Niger Delta remains underdeveloped despite its substantial contributions to Nigeria's economy and its vast talents and resources. An oil and gas expert, Mr. Simbi Wabote, who previously served as the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), revealed alarming details. He stated that approximately $258 billion has accrued to the six Niger Delta states from federal allocations, excess crude earnings, the amnesty programme, and other interventions. However, this massive sum has not translated into commensurate development for the region.
Wabote attributed this failure to policy inconsistencies, weak institutional frameworks, and a volatile political environment, noting that the funds were neither properly accounted for nor effectively deployed to transform the area. Speaking at the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA) in Port Harcourt, he expressed deep concern over the persistent development gap. He cited Rwanda as a positive example, highlighting how strategic planning and policy discipline have driven growth, even with fewer resources compared to the Niger Delta.
Call for Collaboration and Clear Development Blueprints
Wabote emphasized the urgent need for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors. He warned that the absence of a clear development blueprint has continued to hinder progress in the Niger Delta. "We must establish clear metrics to monitor progress and set measurable targets by institutionalising accountability," he stressed, underscoring the importance of transparent and results-oriented governance.
In his remarks, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), called for a comprehensive needs assessment to guide development interventions in the region. He explained that a structured needs assessment framework would ensure that projects are aligned with the priorities of the local population and deliver meaningful impact. Ogbuku noted that the current board of the commission is committed to changing the narrative by aligning its programmes with the realities of the region.
He also commended President Bola Tinubu for ensuring stability in the commission through continuity in leadership. Ogbuku urged all stakeholders to collaborate in developing a fresh blueprint for business and economic growth in the Niger Delta. "We must think outside the box to restore the region to its former economic strength. Government alone cannot drive this process; the private sector must take the lead," he asserted, highlighting the critical role of private enterprise in driving sustainable development.
Forum Aims to Revitalize Business and Economic Growth
Ambassador Idaere Gogo Ogan, Chairman of the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, described the forum as a landmark initiative aimed at revitalizing business activities and stimulating economic growth in the region. He stated that the conference would produce a strategic roadmap to harness the region's vast potential and reposition it as a major contributor to the national economy.
"We must move beyond potentials to measurable results. The Niger Delta occupies a significant position in Nigeria's economy and must leverage this advantage for sustainable growth," Ogan said, calling for actionable plans and tangible outcomes to address the region's challenges and unlock its economic opportunities.
