The Director-General of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Chukwuemeka Woke, has issued a powerful appeal for Nigerians to make agriculture and food production a top national priority. He described the sector as a fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable economic growth and stability.
A Call to Action from the Farm
Woke made this urgent call on 10 January 2026 while personally flagging off the harvest of yams from his own farm. The farm is situated in the Isiodu community, Emohua Local Council, Rivers State. By leading with practical example, the NOSDRA boss emphasized that increased food output is critical to feeding Nigeria's rapidly expanding population, reducing poverty, and driving the economy forward.
He stressed that the responsibility for food security must shift from being seen as a burden carried solely by rural farmers to a collective national obligation. Woke urged individuals, communities, and governments at every level to move beyond mere talk and take agriculture seriously with concrete actions.
Challenges and the Path Forward
In his address, Woke did not shy away from outlining the significant hurdles facing Nigerian farmers. He highlighted key issues including:
- Limited access to affordable finance and credit.
- Inadequate rural infrastructure like roads and storage facilities.
- The escalating adverse effects of climate change on farming.
Despite these constraints, the NOSDRA Director-General expressed strong optimism. He believes Nigeria can overcome food insecurity through a strategic combination of supportive government policies, robust institutional backing, and effective collaboration among all stakeholders.
"Food production is not just a matter for farmers alone; it is a collective responsibility. We must work together to support farmers and increase productivity," Woke stated emphatically.
Practical Steps and Community Impact
To transform this vision into reality, Woke called for deepened investment in the agricultural sector. His recommendations include providing affordable financing options for farmers, upgrading rural infrastructure, and delivering effective extension services to disseminate knowledge.
He also advised farmers to embrace modern best practices to boost yields and ensure sustainability. This involves using improved seedlings, adopting contemporary farming techniques, and applying appropriate fertilizers.
The yam harvest event drew traditional rulers, local farmers, and stakeholders from Emohua and nearby communities. They praised Woke for his hands-on leadership and personal investment in farming. Attendees noted that his farm has become a model for improved yam cultivation in the area, demonstrating advanced methods in both production and post-harvest management.
This initiative was widely seen as a practical demonstration of commitment to tackling food security and promoting rural development from the ground up.
