The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially recognised the establishment of Taraba State University of Tropical Agriculture, Science, Technology, and Climate Action (TSU-TASCA) in Gembu as a state-owned university in Nigeria. The announcement was made on Thursday, June 25, through the NUC's official X account, @OfficialNUC.
NUC Executive Secretary Highlights Milestone
The NUC Executive Secretary stated that the approval marks an important milestone for the institution and pledged the commission's support to help the university develop in line with its quality assurance requirements. The recognition formally admits the new institution into Nigeria's university system, where it will operate under NUC standards and guidelines.
Governor Kefas Outlines University's Vision
During the recognition ceremony at the NUC office, Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas said the university's creation was based on a plan to build a world-class institution addressing major regional and global challenges. He emphasised that the university's vision centres on "tropical agriculture, scientific innovation, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience."
The new university is expected to support human capital development, research, innovation, and sustainable development. It will also expand access to university education in Nigeria, particularly for students interested in agriculture, technology, and climate-related fields.
Impact on Nigeria's Higher Education Landscape
TSU-TASCA joins the ranks of Nigeria's state universities and is expected to contribute to knowledge development and solutions to environmental and agricultural challenges. The recognition underscores the NUC's commitment to expanding specialised higher education opportunities across the country.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the NUC approved 33 new universities in 2025, including seven federal, six state, and 20 private institutions, bringing Nigeria's total number of universities to 309. The commission also approved six new programmes for the University of Benin (UNIBEN) for the 2026/2027 academic session, including Nursing Science, Speech Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, International Relations, Intelligence and Security Studies, and Primary Education.
