Oyo State Government Finalizes Site Inspection for Major Erosion Control Project

The Oyo State Government has officially completed the conclusive inspection of designated sites for intervention under the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), which is supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB). This significant milestone signals a major advancement toward the imminent commencement of construction activities across the state.

Comprehensive Evaluation Across Three Senatorial Districts

The inspection exercise, meticulously led by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Honorable Ademola Aderinto, comprehensively covered all three senatorial districts within Oyo State. This tour marked the definitive concluding phase of the project's extensive site evaluation process, ensuring thorough preparation before implementation begins.

Commissioner Aderinto confirmed that the inspection verified Oyo State has successfully fulfilled all necessary conditions required to transition into the project's implementation stage. He emphasized that this critical initiative is specifically designed to provide substantial relief to communities that have been severely impacted by persistent erosion and widespread environmental degradation.

Governor Makinde's Environmental Leadership Praised

The commissioner publicly credited State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, for his administration's unwavering and consistent commitment to environmental protection, proactive climate change adaptation strategies, and comprehensive erosion control measures implemented statewide. "With all preparatory procedures now complete, the NEWMAP-EIB intervention is ready to move into its construction and implementation phase," Aderinto declared authoritatively.

During the extensive site visits, Aderinto and the dedicated project team actively engaged with residents and community leaders in the affected areas. Local stakeholders expressed profound gratitude to the state government and shared optimistic expectations that the intervention would effectively address the pressing environmental challenges confronting their communities.

Community Participation and Environmental Stewardship Emphasized

Commissioner Aderinto strongly emphasized the indispensable role of community participation in ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the project. He simultaneously cautioned residents against engaging in activities that could exacerbate environmental problems, explicitly mentioning harmful practices such as open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse near streams and waterways.

The inspection visits included multiple critical locations: Aborerin Stream in Eruwa within Ibarapa East Local Government Area, Fedomu Stream in Igbeti located in Olorunsogo Local Government Area, and various erosion-prone sites situated within the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology campus. This comprehensive exercise forms an integral part of the final preparatory steps ahead of the official launch of the NEWMAP-EIB project in Oyo State.

Commissioner Aderinto was accompanied throughout the inspection by the Project Coordinator, Barrister Tayo Ayoade, along with members of the Oyo State Project Management Unit who are overseeing the programme's execution. This collaborative effort underscores the coordinated approach being taken to address environmental challenges through this significant infrastructure project.
