Rotary Club Donates Borehole to Lagos Market

In a significant move to enhance hygiene and sanitation in urban markets, the Rotary Club of Lagos Central has recently donated a borehole facility to traders at Sandgrouse Market on Lagos Island. This initiative aims to provide clean and accessible water, addressing critical needs in a bustling commercial area.

Addressing Water and Sanitation Challenges

Elizabeth Ajilore, the President of the Rotary Club of Lagos Central, emphasized that this project aligns with four key areas of Rotary's focus: water, sanitation and hygiene, community empowerment, environmental sustainability, and disease prevention. She highlighted that clean water is not merely a convenience but a fundamental necessity for good health, dignity, and economic productivity, particularly in a high-traffic market like Sandgrouse.

Needs Assessment and Implementation

Lanre Adedoyin, the District Governor of Rotary District 9112, explained that members of the club conducted a thorough needs assessment, which revealed a significant challenge in accessing clean water at the market. In response, they supported the installation of a borehole and provided a brand-new generating set to ensure reliable power for the facility. Adedoyin stated, "Without water, there is no life. We strive to create lasting impacts that improve livelihoods."

Community Response and Maintenance

The market leaders, Babaloja Aderinto Kamarudeen and Iyaloja Modinot Ayinke, expressed their gratitude for the generous gesture. They commended the Rotary Club for its contribution and assured that the facility would be properly maintained to sustain its benefits for the traders and the broader community.

This donation is expected to significantly boost hygiene standards, reduce waterborne diseases, and support economic activities by ensuring a steady supply of clean water, thereby fostering a healthier and more productive market environment.
