The African Business Aviation Association (AfBAA) has initiated a groundbreaking research project aimed at enhancing understanding, perception, and knowledge of the business aviation sector across the African continent. The first phase of this multi-phase initiative has already commenced, with preliminary results expected to be unveiled at the Aviation Africa event in Nairobi, Kenya, scheduled for 9-10 September 2026, according to a statement by Jane Stanbury, media consultant to the association.
Research Conducted by Seefeld Group
The study is being carried out by Seefeld Group, an independent consultancy specializing in behavioral economics and strategic marketing research. Under the leadership of its President, Charles Porteous, this much-needed research aims to compile a unified dataset that will enable AfBAA to gain a deeper understanding of business aviation in Africa. The data will also provide valuable insights for existing members and help attract new members to the organization.
Objectives and Anticipated Impact
Initiated by the current AfBAA executive, the research will ultimately clarify the current state of the industry in contemporary Africa. Dawit Lemma, Chairperson of AfBAA, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “This type of research is long overdue for our members and those seeking to operate effectively in Africa. We anticipate that the data will provide foundations for smarter investment, create platforms from which to increase advocacy, enhance safety, and enable more resilient operations and business longevity.”
Scope of the First Phase
The first phase employs an iterative, data-first technical approach, encompassing fleet, economic, and maintenance analyses, along with a comprehensive review of media perceptions of the industry. The research will cover non-scheduled aviation activity, including business jets, turboprops, helicopters, and UAVs, reflecting the broad scope of AfBAA’s membership.
