Air Chief Visits Pilots After Niger State Jet Crash

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has lauded the bravery and skill of two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) pilots who survived a dramatic aircraft crash in Niger State. The incident involved an NAF Alpha Jet which suffered an in-flight emergency and crashed near Karabonde in Borgu Local Government Area.

Commendation for Courage and Quick Thinking

Air Marshal Aneke personally visited the pilots at a hospital in Abuja on the night of Saturday, December 6, 2025. During the visit, he praised the airmen for their "sound judgement and exemplary discipline." He emphasized that their swift actions in handling the emergency were instrumental in steering the failing aircraft away from populated zones, thereby averting potential casualties on the ground.

Details of the Incident and Response

According to an official statement from the Nigerian Air Force, the accident occurred shortly after take-off from NAF Base Kainji. The flight was a post-inspection functional check. Despite the sudden emergency, the pilots maintained their composure, successfully maneuvered the jet away from inhabited areas, and executed a safe ejection from the aircraft.

Search and Rescue teams promptly located and recovered both pilots. They are currently undergoing routine medical evaluation to ensure their full recovery. The CAS also commended the coordinated efforts of the base's fire and crash units, medical teams, and other personnel who secured the crash site and supported the recovery operation.

Investigation Ordered into the Crash

In response to the accident, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke has directed the immediate constitution of a Board of Inquiry. This board is tasked with thoroughly investigating the root cause of the in-flight emergency that led to the loss of the Alpha Jet. The move underscores the NAF's commitment to safety and operational standards.

The successful ejection and survival of the pilots highlight the critical importance of rigorous training and emergency procedures within the Nigerian Air Force. The service continues to monitor the situation as the investigation progresses.
