According to the Ethiopian government's official e-visa portal, tourist visa applications are processed within three days. The country offers single-entry options for two distinct stay durations, each carrying a different fee that could surprise many travellers.
Visa Costs: 30-Day and 90-Day Options
Foreigners applying for a short-stay single-entry visa, which permits a 30-day stay in Ethiopia, are required to pay $62 USD (approximately N85,561). Those who need more time can opt for the long-stay single-entry visa, allowing up to 90 days at a cost of $152 USD (around N209,755). Both options are single-entry, meaning travellers cannot re-enter Ethiopia after leaving without a new visa.
Extension Fees for Longer Stays
Short-stay visa holders seeking an additional 30 days must pay $102 USD (roughly N140,756) to extend their stay. For long-stay visa holders, extending the 90-day visa costs $302 USD (approximately N416,750). The Ethiopian government stresses that any foreigner intending to stay longer than their visa permits must begin the extension process before the current approval lapses. Applications for extensions must be submitted before the visa expires, not after.
