FG Issues NOTAM for Abuja Airspace During Nigeria's First International Airshow
FG Issues NOTAM for Nigeria International Airshow

The Federal Government has taken a crucial safety step ahead of the historic Nigeria International Airshow by issuing a formal Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to all airlines. This directive instructs carriers to avoid flying into Abuja during specific aerial displays by the Nigeria Air Force, ensuring a secure environment for the landmark event.

Airspace Safety Measures for Inaugural Event

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made this announcement on Friday after personally inspecting the airside venue at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The minister confirmed that the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has already disseminated the NOTAM. He detailed that for brief periods on the first and last day of the three-day airshow, starting on Tuesday, the airspace around the Abuja airport will be temporarily closed.

"Airlines have been told not to fly in or out, to hold their flights for that period, not to fly into Abuja for that period," Keyamo stated, explaining that this is to accommodate the spectacular sky displays by the Nigeria Air Force.

Showcasing Nigeria's Aviation Potential to the World

Minister Keyamo positioned the Nigeria International Airshow as a pivotal platform for the nation's aviation sector. He drew parallels with globally renowned events like the Farnborough Airshow in the UK and the Paris Airshow, emphasizing that such gatherings are vital for showcasing a country's aviation ecosystem.

"We are doing an international airshow and we are expecting foreign visitors, foreign airlines, and foreign investors to come and see what we have to offer," he said. He argued that it is not necessary for Nigeria's aviation industry to be fully developed before advertising its potential, stating that now is the perfect time to invite global investors to witness the sector's growth trajectory.

Keyamo credited the present administration's policy rollouts for fostering this growth, adding that the entire programme is privately sponsored, with the government providing franchise support.

Economic and Diplomatic Benefits for Local Operators

The airshow is set to kick off the festive Detty December period, with investors expected to begin arriving from Sunday. Beyond the aerial spectacle, the event is packed with opportunities for business development.

Key benefits for local operators include:

  • Person-to-person diplomatic exchanges
  • Direct business contact and deal-making
  • Access to financiers and international partners

Brian Williams, the event organizer, confirmed participation from all invited foreign airlines and international investors, signaling strong global interest in Nigeria's burgeoning aviation market. The event will also feature talk shows, seminars, product displays, and other activities designed to foster industry growth.
