The Federal Government has announced plans to extend the existing Lagos rail network to the domestic and international terminals of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) in Lagos. This initiative is part of efforts to enhance connectivity and solidify Lagos's position as a leading aviation hub in Africa.
Keyamo Unveils Rail Extension Plans
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed the plans during the opening ceremony of Invest Lagos 3.0, an event organized by the Lagos State Government. Keyamo noted that discussions between the ministry and the state government are already underway to commence the rail project into the airport.
The proposed rail extension will connect the existing line that currently terminates at Ikeja Bus Stop to the General Aviation Terminal (GAT), proceed through the Murtala Muhammed Airport Two (MMA2) operated by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), and finally reach the international wing of the airport. Keyamo emphasized that the project would significantly improve accessibility to Nigeria's busiest airport and support the government's vision of transforming Lagos into a major aviation and logistics hub for Africa.
Passenger Traffic Statistics
Keyamo revealed that Lagos accounts for approximately 67 percent of all passenger traffic passing through Nigeria's airports, underscoring the state's strategic importance to the aviation sector. He highlighted Lagos's unique geographical advantages, including its equidistant position from South America, Southern Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, which positions it to compete with established hubs like Addis Ababa and Lome.
Infrastructure Investments
The minister also discussed ongoing investments under President Bola Tinubu's administration, including a $500 million commitment to reconstruct and modernize the demolished international terminal at Lagos airport. This investment aims to transform the 50-year-old facility into a world-class terminal capable of handling increased passenger and cargo traffic.
Additionally, the government has expanded Nigeria's international airport network with the addition of Victor Attah International Airport and Maiduguri International Airport, bringing the total number of international airports to seven. Keyamo also noted the resolution of the legal dispute between BASL and the Federal Government, highlighting the government's commitment to fostering private sector participation.
Call for Investors
Keyamo appealed to local and foreign investors to seize emerging opportunities in the aviation sector, including the proposed airport project in the Lekki-Epe corridor promoted by the Lagos State Government. He expressed confidence that these developments would position Lagos as a premier aviation hub in Africa.
