Former Gombe State governor and Senator representing Gombe Central, Danjuma Goje, has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the reconstruction of the 125-kilometre Gombe-Biu highway. On Thursday, the federal government flagged off the N1.245 trillion project at the Gombe-Biu road. The road under the project will be dualised using rigid pavement and extended to Maiduguri, Yola and Jalingo to link the six north-east states.
Goje's Commendation
Goje, while commenting on the project, said he had repeatedly called for the construction of a major highway linking states in the north-east. He stated, “When I heard that the minister of works, Engineer Dave Umahi, was in Gombe to flag off the construction of the road from Gombe to Biu, I felt it was necessary to commend the federal government. A leader is supposed to listen to the yearnings and aspirations of the people he leads. What has happened shows that the president is a listening leader.”
Presidential Commitment
He said the flag-off and mobilisation of contractors on the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe road also showed that the president moves beyond promises. The senator urged residents of the state to reciprocate the gesture by supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. “If somebody does good to you, do good to him. The president has done good to us as far as this highway construction is concerned, so we should be very appreciative of him and his party,” he said.
Historical Context
Senator Goje recalled that the road has suffered decades of deterioration and failed rehabilitation attempts by past administrations. This new approval marks a significant step toward improving infrastructure in the region.
